Design and Technology
Design and Technology is about investigating, evaluating, designing and making products.
In Key Stage 1 the children learn about how to think imaginatively and talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making. They build on their early childhood experiences of investigating objects around them; exploring familiar items, drawing and modeling the ideas they have. They learn about the importance of safety and how they can start to use ICT to help design and build things.
Within Key Stage 2, the children develop skills in working both independently and as part of a team to complete a range of increasingly complex designing and making activities. They consider what products are used for and the needs of the people who use them. Rather than simply constructing things, they are encouraged to continually assess how well their project is progressing; making changes and improvements as required. They draw upon their knowledge and understanding of other curriculum areas and use computers to improve their end products.
